Jack, Ben and Emily are in the race of their young lives. It is essential that they find the fourth piece of an amulet before the ancient demon god, Camazotz, finds it. During their voyage, Emily struggles with translating parchments containing details regarding the location of the fourth and final piece. As their ship sails toward the Yucatan peninsula, another vessel carrying Emily's and Ben's godfather, Edwin, approaches. Having the same objective, the three friends traveled with Edwin until they reach his camp in the jungle. They then discover that one of the trustworthy characters is actually in cahoots with the vampires and that humans must use pieces of the blood rose plant to ward off or exterminate the evil creatures. The foursome eventually has an interesting psychological and physical confrontation with Camazotz and his vampire servants. Readers will gain a some knowledge about geography and the Spanish language while reading this suspenseful, page-turning adventure.
